Human Design Strategy and Authority: The Complete Guide to Making Correct Decisions
Published on April 15, 2026 by Hermes

Why Strategy and Authority Is the Foundation of Human Design
Human Design Strategy and Authority is the mechanical basis of correct decision-making. Not theory. Not philosophy. A practical method for moving through life without the distortion of the not-self mind.
Ra Uru Hu said it plainly: the body is the life. If you do not allow the body to operate the way it was designed to operate, you distort your life. Every other piece of Human Design knowledge—gates, channels, profiles, incarnation crosses—rests on this single foundation. Without Strategy and Authority, the rest is intellectual entertainment.
Strategy tells you how to engage with life according to your Type. Authority tells you how to make decisions that are correct for you. Together they form the only reliable navigation system you have.
If you haven't pulled up your chart yet, you can do so at humandesign.wtf to follow along with your own design.
The Mind Cannot Make Correct Decisions
This is the hardest thing to accept. It is also the most important.
The mind is brilliant. It can conceptualize, analyze, compare, remember. It can serve as extraordinary outer authority for others. But it was never designed to be your inner authority—the thing that makes decisions about your life.
Here is why. The mind operates through openness. Your undefined and open centers condition the way your mind thinks. An open Solar Plexus avoids confrontation and truth. An open Heart Center tries to prove itself. An open Head Center thinks about things that do not matter. These are not your thoughts. They are conditioning patterns that hijack your decision-making.
When the mind runs your life, it makes decisions based on fear, conditioning, and the not-self strategies of your open centers. It chases what you are not. It cannot feel your Sacral response. It cannot hear your splenic hit. It cannot wait through an emotional wave. It operates on a frequency that has nothing to do with your correct trajectory.
As Ra put it: the mind will lie and cheat and fool you. It will bring you pain and suffering. And you will be like everybody else.
The not-self mind is the common disease. Strategy and Authority is the cure. Not because it fixes the mind, but because it removes the mind from the driver's seat. The mind becomes a passenger—free to observe, measure, and eventually express wisdom as outer authority. But it no longer steers.
For a deeper look at how the not-self operates, see our guide on the not-self in Human Design.
The Four Strategies: How Each Type Engages With Life
Strategy is determined by your Type. There are four Types in Human Design, each with a distinct aura mechanic that determines how life comes to them correctly.
Manifestor Strategy: To Inform
Manifestors have a closed, repelling aura. They are the only Type designed to initiate action. Their strategy is to inform before they act—not to ask permission, but to reduce the resistance their closed aura naturally creates.
When a Manifestor informs, they clear the energetic field around them. People are less likely to block or interfere. The signature of a Manifestor living correctly is peace. The not-self theme is anger—the friction that builds when they either fail to inform or are controlled by others.
Learn more in our Manifestor guide.
Generator and Manifesting Generator Strategy: To Respond
Generators and Manifesting Generators have an open, enveloping aura that pulls life toward them. Their strategy is to wait to respond. This does not mean passivity. It means engaging with what life brings rather than initiating from the mind.
Response is a body experience. Something enters the Generator's field—a question, an opportunity, an image—and the Sacral responds with a gut-level yes or no. The signature is satisfaction. The not-self theme is frustration—the result of initiating action that was never correct for them.
Our Generator guide and response strategy deep-dive cover this in detail.
Projector Strategy: To Wait for the Invitation
Projectors have a focused, penetrating aura. They see into others. Their strategy is to wait for the invitation for the major decisions in life—career, love, where to live. Between invitations, Projectors study, rest, and develop mastery.
When recognized and invited correctly, the Projector's guidance lands. When they initiate without invitation, they meet bitterness and resistance. The signature is success. The not-self theme is bitterness.
See our comprehensive Projector guide and Projector burnout prevention.
Reflector Strategy: To Wait a Lunar Cycle
Reflectors have a resistant, sampling aura. With no defined centers, they reflect the environment around them. Their strategy is to wait 28 days—a full lunar cycle—before making major decisions. This gives them time to move through every possible configuration as the Moon transits each gate.
The signature is surprise. The not-self theme is disappointment. Our Reflector guide and lunar cycle strategy article go deeper.
| Type | Strategy | Signature | Not-Self Theme | |------|----------|-----------|----------------| | Manifestor | Inform | Peace | Anger | | Generator / MG | Wait to Respond | Satisfaction | Frustration | | Projector | Wait for the Invitation | Success | Bitterness | | Reflector | Wait a Lunar Cycle | Surprise | Disappointment |
The Seven Authorities: Your Inner Decision-Making System
Authority is determined by the hierarchy of defined centers in your chart. It is not chosen. It is mechanical. The body has an intelligence that the mind cannot replicate.
Here are the seven authorities in their hierarchical order. If you have a defined Solar Plexus, that is your authority regardless of what else is defined. If the Solar Plexus is undefined, you look to the next center in the hierarchy, and so on.
1. Emotional / Solar Plexus Authority
Who has it: Anyone with a defined Solar Plexus Center—roughly 50% of humanity.
How it works: There is no truth in the now. This is the foundational rule. The Solar Plexus operates as a wave—rising, falling, moving through hope and pain. Decisions made at the peak of the wave are as unreliable as those made at the bottom.
Emotional authority requires time. You ride the wave. You sleep on it. You wait until there is enough clarity—not absolute clarity, which never comes, but sufficient clarity. Over time, emotional beings develop a feel for when they have moved through enough of the wave to act. Seventy, eighty, ninety percent clarity. Never one hundred.
The not-self emotional being acts in the moment—says yes when high, says no when low, and creates chaos in their wake.
Our full guide on Emotional Authority covers this in depth.
2. Sacral Authority
Who has it: Generators and Manifesting Generators with a defined Sacral Center and an undefined Solar Plexus.
How it works: The Sacral speaks in sounds and sensations. It is a gut-level response—an uh-huh (yes) or an uhn-uhn (no). It responds in the moment to life as it comes. There is no waiting required. The response is immediate and reliable.
The key is that the Sacral can only respond. It cannot initiate. It needs something to respond to—a question, a situation, an encounter. Yes/no questions are the most effective way to access Sacral authority.
The not-self Generator ignores the Sacral and initiates from the mind, leading to frustration and exhaustion.

3. Splenic Authority
Who has it: People with a defined Spleen, undefined Solar Plexus, and undefined Sacral—typically Manifestors and Projectors.
How it works: The Spleen speaks once, in the moment, and does not repeat itself. It is a spontaneous hit of intuition—a knowing that arrives as a whisper, a body sensation, a flash of recognition. It operates in the now.
Splenic authority is the oldest awareness system in the body. It is concerned with survival, health, and well-being. It tells you what is safe and what is not. The challenge is that the mind is louder. The Spleen's voice is quiet and easily overridden.
The not-self with splenic authority holds on to things that are not good for them because the mind rationalizes staying.
Our guide on Splenic Authority explores this authority.
4. Ego / Heart Authority
Who has it: A small number of Manifestors and Projectors who have a defined Heart/Ego Center connected to the Throat (Manifestors) or not connected to the Throat but without higher authorities (Projectors).
How it works: The Ego speaks through willpower and desire. "Do I want this? Is my heart in it? What's in it for me?" These are not selfish questions—they are the correct operating frequency for Ego authority.
The Heart Center operates on a work/rest cycle. It cannot sustain constant output. Ego-authority beings must listen to what they genuinely have the will for and what they do not. Promises made from the Ego must be kept, or the heart suffers.
The not-self with undefined Ego makes promises to prove their worth—and breaks under the weight of commitments that were never theirs.
Learn more in Ego (Heart) Authority: Willpower and Promises.
5. Self-Projected Authority
Who has it: Projectors with a defined G Center connected to the Throat, but without defined Solar Plexus, Sacral, Spleen, or Heart Centers.
How it works: Self-Projected authority operates through the voice. These Projectors need to hear themselves speak to know what is true for them. Not think about it. Not write it down. Speak it aloud—ideally to someone who can listen without agenda.
When a Self-Projected Projector talks through a decision, the truth reveals itself in the sound and direction of their own words. They hear their identity—their G Center—expressing what is correct.
The not-self with Self-Projected authority tries to figure things out silently in their head, which disconnects them from their source of clarity.
Our article on Self-Projected Authority covers this rare authority.
6. Environmental / Mental (No Inner Authority)
Who has it: Mental Projectors—Projectors with only the Head and Ajna Centers defined (and possibly the Throat). No centers below the Throat are defined.
How it works: These beings have no traditional inner authority. Their decision-making process is environmental. They need to be in the correct physical space, talking to the right people, to gain clarity. The environment itself becomes the sounding board.
Mental Projectors discuss things openly. They feel the resonance of certain places and people. Over time, they develop sensitivity to what environments support clarity and which do not. This is the most unusual authority and requires a very specific approach to life.
The not-self Mental Projector tries to use the mind to make decisions—but the mind is precisely what cannot be trusted here.
Read more in Environmental Authority: Finding Your Place.
7. Lunar Authority
Who has it: Reflectors only.
How it works: Reflectors have no defined centers at all. They sample and reflect the energy around them. Their authority is the Moon. Over the course of 28 days, the Moon moves through all 64 gates, activating different parts of the Reflector's design and giving them access to different perspectives.
By waiting a full lunar cycle, a Reflector can feel a decision from every angle. They talk to trusted people throughout the month, noticing how their clarity shifts. At the end of the cycle, a direction emerges.
The not-self Reflector makes impulsive decisions based on whoever's energy they are amplifying in the moment, leading to deep disappointment.
Our Reflector strategy guide covers the lunar cycle process.
The Authority Hierarchy at a Glance
| Priority | Authority | Center | Who Has It | |----------|-----------|--------|------------| | 1 | Emotional / Solar Plexus | Solar Plexus (defined) | ~50% of population | | 2 | Sacral | Sacral (defined, SP open) | Generators, MGs | | 3 | Splenic | Spleen (defined, SP & Sacral open) | Manifestors, Projectors | | 4 | Ego / Heart | Heart (defined, above centers open) | Rare Manifestors, Projectors | | 5 | Self-Projected | G Center to Throat | Rare Projectors | | 6 | Environmental | Head/Ajna only | Mental Projectors | | 7 | Lunar | No defined centers | Reflectors only |
The hierarchy is absolute. If your Solar Plexus is defined, you are emotional authority. Period. Even if you also have a defined Sacral, Spleen, and Heart. The Solar Plexus overrides everything because the emotional wave distorts all other signals until it has been given time to clarify.
How Strategy and Authority Work Together
Strategy and Authority are not separate systems. They operate as one integrated mechanism.
A Generator with Emotional Authority waits to respond and waits through their emotional wave. The Sacral responds—but that initial response must be checked over time against the emotional wave before acting.
A Manifestor with Splenic Authority gets a spontaneous knowing and informs before acting. The splenic hit tells them what is correct; informing clears the path.
A Projector with Emotional Authority waits for the invitation and rides the emotional wave before accepting. The invitation arrives; clarity about whether to accept comes through time and patience.
The strategy handles the engagement with life. The authority handles the decision itself. Both must be honored.
For practical guidance on combining these, see our piece on using Human Design for better decision-making.
The Deconditioning Process
Following your Strategy and Authority is simple to understand and difficult to practice. The mind does not surrender easily. It has been running the show for decades. It has opinions. It has fears. It has momentum.
Ra said it takes approximately seven years—one full cellular cycle—to decondition. That does not mean seven years of misery. It means seven years of increasingly correct decisions, increasing alignment, and the gradual stripping away of not-self patterns.
The process looks like this:
- Learn your Type, Strategy, and Authority. This is the intellectual entry point.
- Begin the experiment. Start making decisions according to your Strategy and Authority. Watch what happens.
- Notice the not-self. Your open centers will scream. The mind will resist. The old patterns will surface. This is deconditioning at work.
- Stay with it. The body aligns. The frequency shifts. The correct geometry of your life begins to emerge.
Our guide on deconditioning and releasing not-self patterns and living your Human Design experiment cover this process.
Real-Life Examples
The Generator who stopped initiating. She had Sacral Authority. For years, she applied for jobs her mind thought were prestigious. Frustration defined her career. When she began waiting to respond, opportunities appeared that she never would have sought. Her Sacral said yes to a role she would have dismissed intellectually. It turned out to be the most satisfying work of her life.
The Emotional Manifestor who learned to wait. He had a pattern of explosive decisions followed by regret. A heated argument would lead to quitting a job that same day. When he learned to inform and ride his wave, the anger began to transform into peace. Not every situation changed—but his decisions stopped creating wreckage.
The Projector who stopped pushing. She had Self-Projected Authority. For years, she marketed herself aggressively, wondering why recognition never came. When she stopped initiating and began developing her mastery, invitations arrived from unexpected places. She learned to talk through decisions aloud with a trusted friend and discovered that her voice told her the truth before her mind could interfere.
Common Questions About Strategy and Authority
Can I have more than one authority? No. You have one authority, determined by the highest-priority defined center in the hierarchy. Other defined centers contribute to your experience but are not your decision-making authority.
What if my authority feels wrong? It probably feels unfamiliar, which the mind interprets as wrong. The mind has been making decisions your entire life. Handing that role to the body feels disorienting at first. This is normal. The experiment is the proof—try it and observe the results.
Does Strategy and Authority apply to small decisions? The more you practice with small decisions, the more natural it becomes for large ones. A Generator can practice Sacral response at the grocery store. An emotional being can practice waiting overnight before responding to an email.
What about Manifesting Generators? Manifesting Generators follow the Generator strategy—wait to respond. They also have a secondary step: after responding, they may need to inform before acting, especially when their actions will impact others. Their authority follows the same hierarchy as everyone else.
See our Manifesting Generator guide for specifics.
How do I know if I'm living my Strategy and Authority correctly? Your signature tells you. If you are experiencing your Type's signature—peace, satisfaction, success, or surprise—you are on track. If you are living in anger, frustration, bitterness, or disappointment, the not-self is still running the show.
Our article on finding your signature and recognizing your not-self theme can help you calibrate.
Why This Matters More Than Anything Else in Human Design
You can memorize every gate. You can study every channel and profile. You can learn the incarnation cross and the variables and the color and tone. None of it matters if your mind is still making your decisions.
Strategy and Authority is the ground floor. It is the experiment. It is the only thing that can actually change the way you move through the world. Everything else in Human Design is outer authority—useful, fascinating, enriching knowledge that you can share with others. But Strategy and Authority is inner authority. It is yours.
The body knows how to live this life. The mind does not. Let the body drive. Sit back. Watch the movie.
That is Human Design in practice. The rest is commentary.
